It is no secret that the U.S. has a couple of broken systems in place that many people today largely depend on, i.e. Social Security and Medicare. It has been thought by many for years now that in no way can our generation ever depend “largely” on these programs when we are old enough to use them, however, my question right now becomes: “in the last couple decades why has no significant legislation been passed to reform the programs that were created many, many decades ago?” It is my opinion, and my opinion only, that the reason for the lack of fixing these huge problems lies in the fact that these reforms are so unpopular, the first politician to try to bring about any significant change will be committing career suicide. The reason politicians do not bring these problems to the forefront to get fixed is because they are in the business of getting reelected, and not always taking the proper course of action, rather partaking in the “most popular thing to do.” So until we get a group of politicians with some “you know what” or when it become too late, then and only then, will these systems get the serious attention, and I mean SERIOUS attention for reform that it has deserved for decades now.
